The Advertisement that Watches You

The New York Times looks back on 2009 and delivers to us their “9th Annual Year in Ideas”. Catching my eye, is this new advertising idea which has started as a one-time installation inside a bus shelter in Berlin. Using a camera attached to a computer with face-tracking software, the image in the advertisement changes based on whether or not someone is looking towards the poster. New technology will also allow advertisements to determine the sex of an onlooker and change pictures to cater to either a man or a woman. There’s a new kid in town and she’s 94!

Geometric abstract painter, Carmen Herrera can finally reap the rewards of a six-decades-long career in art. Painting since the 1930′s and ahead of her time, she has been long-overlooked, only selling her first painting 5 years ago in 2004. Since then, her pieces have been in high demand by collectors and also have entered permanent exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and the Tate Modern. Her original pieces now sell from anywhere between $30-45K.

Born in 1915 in Havana, Cuba she took art lessons as a child, attended finishing school in Paris and then moved on to achieve a Cuban university degree in architecture. In 1939, she married her husband Jesse Loewenthal and together they moved to New York City. It was not until the two of them moved to Paris after World War II that she finally cultivated a deep passion for this geometrical style of art. Eventually moving back to New York, she found a resistance to her style of painting and could hardly get a gallery to exhibit her work. Her husband of 61 years, she says, was her unflinching supporter and the reason she continued to paint despite only having a few exhibits here and there throughout most of her life. In 2004, she was part of an exhibit at the Latin Collector Gallery in Manhattan which celebrated female geometric painters and sold her first piece.
