Andy Warhol: The Last Decade

Opening Friday June 18th at the Brooklyn Museum in Prospect Heights, is Andy Warhol: The Last Decade which covers 50 pieces of his most astounding work created between 1978 and 1987. The presentation includes a number of self-portraits, large-scale collaborations with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, and Keith Haring as well as variations of da Vinci’s The Last Supper which was one of the largest series of his career.

Perhaps he is known best for his reinvention of the Campbell’s soup can and many Marilyn Monroe portraits however, this exhibit lends itself to capturing the breathtaking transformation of Warhol’s imagination. He introduces many new painting techniques as well as his well-known experimentation with mixing arcrylic and urine to create an oxidation effect, shown below in The Oxidation Painting.

Through numerous large-scale collaborations with his good friend Jean-Michel Basquiat, Warhol was inspired to revisit his hand-painted imagery in the 1980′s and no other period of his creation left such a mark as this one. This wildly personal exhibit also touches on his journey into television and newspapers as there will be a number of short film clips on view which were created for MTV. The Last Decade truly is his greatest triumph and an amazing closing chapter to the beautiful and tumultuous life that was Andy Warhol.

The exhibit will be running through September 12, 2010.
