Art Basel Miami, Dec 3rd – 6th

Here we are again and it’s the most wonderful time of the year!  This weekend marks the 7th annual Art Basel Miami show, arguably the most important art industry event in the United States.  The sister event to Switzerland’s Art Basel – which has been the world’s leading art show for the last 40 years – will once again bring the storm of scenesters and gallery hounds to the shores of Miami, each and every one of them clamouring for their own turn in the spotlight.

The Magic City will turn over it’s streets to swarms of artists, gallery owners, collectors, critics, groupies and aficionado’s alike who will gather to thaw out for the weekend and do business 2 blocks from the ocean.  Kicking off Thursday, December 3rd at the Miami Convention Center, over 150 galleries will convene from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and South Africa, bringing to us a sensory overload of exhibits, music, film, fashion and design.  The annual event draws thousands of people, at times beating out the attendance in Switzerland.  Not bad for an event only in it’s 7th year.

Art Basel Miami is essentially a retail art exhibit as opposed to a museum-type show in that, you know who will be there, you know what you want and you’ve come prepared to be the one who walks away with the prize.  Whether it be a new original for your collection or a new artist for your gallery, you’re there to meet, to greet and most importantly, to buy.  No longer just another outpost of New York, Art Basel has given the shiny City under the Sun their own concrete identity in the art industry and this weekend, their lights will definitely inspire.
