Katsuyo Aoki “Predictive Dream”
Japanese sculptor Katsuyo Aoki’s series “Predictive Dream” is a collection of elaborately-decorated porcelain replicas of human skulls. Her use of ornate lacy patterns bestows a nostalgic romance upon an otherwise vulgar object. The fragility of the ceramic medium supports the contradicting duality of the beautiful and the grotesque, as Aoki comments on the complex nature of our modern world.

Martin Wittfooth “The Passions”
Toronto-based artist Martin Wittfooth’s new series of paintings “The Passions” will be at the Lyons Wier Gallery in New York City starting October 13, 2011. Wittfooth uses religious themes to comment on environmental issues. The series is a reinterpretation of the passion of the saints with the animal kingdom viewed as martyrs at the hands of human-created environmental disasters. RIPO “Casa Nova ” Print
Barcelona-based graffiti artist RIPO released a new 38 x 28 inch print of a demolished house he painted in the Winter of 2009. The vivid mural is characteristic of RIPO’s use of negative space in his lettering, and a stunning juxtaposition of the decrepit and the ornate. The archival giclée print, entitled “Casa Nova”, will be released in an edition of only ten, so grab one while you still can.
Alexis Mackenzie “True Love”
San Francisco-based collage artist Alexis Mackenzie creates vintage-inspired floral compilations out of found paper. Painstakingly forming letters out of plant and flower illustrations and photographs, Mackenzie’s work has a romantic retro feel about it.
